Description

Roy and Chetty reported prognostic factors for a patient with a goblet cell carcinoid tumor of the appendix. These can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from the University of Toronto and University of Glasgow.

Patient selection: goblet cell carcinoid of the appendix

Factors associated with a worse prognosis for a patient with a goblet cell carcinoid of the appendix:

(1) evidence of metastatic disease (peritoneal carcinomatosis, ovarian in female, lymph nodes)

(2) angioinvasion

(3) locoregional invasion (serosal, mesoappendix, cecum)

(4) histologic proliferative features (>= 2 mitoses per 10 high power fields; Ki-67 index > 3%)

(5) increased number of Paneth cells

(6) failure to resect adequately
