Description

Raschilas et al evaluated adults with Herpes simplex virus (HSV) encephalitis. They identified factors associated with outcome at 6 months. The authors are from multiple hospitals in France and participants in the French Herpes Simplex Encephalitis Study Group.

Poor outcome: death or severe disability at 6 months

Parameters:

(1) SAPS II score on admission (Simplified Acute Physiology Score)

(2) number of days between admission and initiaion of acyclovir therapy

Points

SAPS II score on admission

< 27

0

>= 27

number of days between admission and start of acyclovir therapy

<= 48 hours

0

> 48 hours (> 2 days)

1

number of risk factors for a poor outcome =

= SUM(points for the 2 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum number of risk factors: 0

• maximum number of risk factors: 2

• The prognosis gets worse as the number of risk factors increase.

Additional factors identified on univariate analysis:

(1) development of a hospital-acquired infection

(2) lower Glasgow Coma Score (GCS) score
