Ramos et al reported prognostic factors for a patient with cystic fibrosis. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the University of Washington Seattle and the University of Toronto.
Patient selection: cystic fibrosis and FEV1 <= 50% of predicted
Outcome: death or lung transplantation within 2 years
Predictors for outcomes:
(1) FEV1 as percent of predicted (OR 1.5 for 5% decrease)
(2) number of pulmonary exacerbations treated with IV antibiotics (OR 1.4 for each event)
(3) continuous or nocturnal oxygen (OR 3.7)
where:
• The time frame for the exacerbations was not stated.
The risk of the outcome increases with the number of predictors present.
