Description

The Kasai procedure (hepatoportoenterostomy) is an operation used to treat biliary atresia. Qisthi et al reported prognostic factors for these patients. The authors are from Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Patient selection: biliary atresia status post Kasai surgery

A key prognostic factor is nutritional status, with malnutrition associated with a greater risk of complications. A serum albumin concentration 3 months after the surgery < 3.5 g/dL is associated with worse survival.

Other prognostic factors:

(1) cholangitis (the authors stated that this is associated with worse prognosis, but the OR in multivariate analysis was 0.74)

(2) ascites

(3) delayed surgery
