Description

Qian et al identified nutritional and other factors associated with survival of a patient with myelodysplastic syndrome. This can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from Nanjing Medical University in Wuxi, China.

Patient selection: myelodysplastic syndrome

Prognostic factors associated with worse survival from multivariate analysis:

(1) high CONUT (Controlling Nutritional Status) score (>= 5.5)

(2) thrombocytopenia (<= 100 * 10^9/L)

(3) intermediate, high or very high risk IPSS-R

The median overall survival for low CONUT group was 17.2 months vs 11 months for high CONUT group.

The risk of poor outcome increases with the number of prognostic factors identified.
