Description

Pandolfi et al reported risk factors for readmission with recurrent sepsis. Recurrent sepsis is associated with increased 1-year mortality. The authors are from Universite Paris Cite.

Patient selection: readmission for recurrent sepsis within 1 year of index admission

Risk factors for recurrent sepsis:

(1) age >= 56 years

(2) cancer

(3) renal disease

(4) long index hospital stay

(5) mediastinal or cardiac infection

Predictors of 1-year mortality:

(1) recurrent sepsis (aOR 2.9)

(2) cancer (aOR 4.4)

(3) dementia (aOR 2.0)

(4) age >= 56 years (aOR from 3.5 to 11.3 depending on age stratum)

(5) septic shock and not admitted to ICU (aOR 1.8)

A number of factors may increase the risk of recurrent sepsis. If recurrent sepsis occurs, then the risk of mortality is increased.
