Description

The prognostic factors selected by Niklasson et al can be used to identify patients with meningococcal infection who are at risk for death.


 

Patient population:

(1) The ages ranged from 6 months to 67 years of age.

(2) All patients were treated at the same hospital over a 9 year period.

(3) Patients included those with either septicemic or meningitis cases.

 

Unfavorable prognostic factors

Definition

absence of meningitis

< 100 WBC per µL in CSF

presence of low blood pressure

systolic blood pressure <= 100 mm Hg in adults and adolescents; <= 70 mm Hg in children <= 14 years of age

presence of petechieae < 12 hours prior to admission

 

presence of marked hyperpyrexia

rectal temperature >= 40°C

absence of marked leukocytosis

< 15,000 per µL

thrombocytopenia

< 100,000 per µL
