Description

Naito et al identified prognostic factors for a patient with metastatic renal cell carcinoma who has undergone metastasectomy. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive or a novel therapy. The authors are from multiple hospitals in Japan.

Patient selection: metastatic renal cell carcinoma following resection of metastases

Parameters:

(1) highest histologic grade using the Japanese classification (Grades 1 to 3)

(2) serum C-reactive protein (CRP) in mg/dL

(3) brain metastases

(4) cancer status after metastasectomy

Interpretation:

• minimum number of poor prognostic factors: 0

• maximum number of poor prognostic factors: 4

• A patient with 3 or 4 poor prognostic factors had a poor prognosis.
