Description

Mollet et al evaluated patients with a lung carcinoma that metastasizes to the skin. These patients are usually incurable and have a poor prognosis. The authors are from the University of Oklahoma.

Features of the lung cancers and skin metastases:

(1) Metastases may appear before or at the same time as the lung primary.

(2) Most tumors are high grade.

(3) TTF-1 is a helpful immunostain that can support the diagnosis of a lung primary.

Factors associated with a poor prognosis:

(1) multiple cutaneous metastases

(2) other distant metastases

(3) unresectable lung carcinoma

(4) small cell undifferentiated neuroendocrine carcinoma
