Michet et al identified prognostic factors for young adults with relapsing polychondritis. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.
Patient selection: adult <= 50 years of age with relapsing polychondritis
Poor prognostic factors:
(1) anemia
(2) saddle nose deformity (as a manifestation of nasal chrondritis)
(3) arthritis
(4) laryngotracheal strictures
(5) vasculitis
(6) microhematuria (as a sign of glomerulonephritis)
The more severe these findings the worse the prognosis.
For older adults (> 50 years of age) only anemia was a significant prognostic factor.
