Description

Martinez et al identified prognostic factors for a patient with nocardiosis. These can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from University Hospital La Fe, Valencia, Spain.

Factors associated with a poor prognosis in a patient with nocardiosis:

(1) disseminated disease, especially with CNS involvement

(2) delay in diagnosis

(3) delay in initiating appropriate antibiotic therapy

A high index of suspicion in a susceptible host and aggressive management can be lifesaving with this condition.
