Lin et al identified prognostic factors for a patient undergoing resection of pulmonary metastases associated with a sarcoma. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management or a novel intervention. The authors are from the University of California Los Angeles.
Patient selection: pulmonary metastases from a sarcoma suitable for resection
Factors associated with a poor prognosis:
(1) age > 45 years
(2) disease-free interval less than 1 year
(3) thoracotomy (open surgery)
(4) pulmonary metastases synchronous with primary sarcoma
(5) location (not visceral or gynecologic; from extremity or non-extremity)
(6) soft tissue sarcoma (versus bone sarcoma)
(7) performance of a lobectomy
