Kondo and Monden reviewed the impact of lymphogenous and hematogenous metastasis for a patient with a thymic epithelial tumor. The authors are from the University of Tokushima.
Thymic epithelial tumors include:
(1) thymoma
(2) thymic carcinoma
(3) thymic carcinoid
5-year survival was better for thymoma than for thymic carcinoma for the same stage.
Predictors for survival for a patient with thymoma:
(1) complete resection
(2) clinical stage of Masaoka et al (lymphogenous or hematologic spread stage IVB; favorable if N0)
Predictors for survival for a patient with thymic carcinoma:
(1) complete resection
(2) lymph node metastasis (poor for N2 and N3)
The impact of M status was overshadowed by N status.
Lymph Node Involvement
N Designation
none
N0
anterior mediastinum
N1
intrathoracic other than anterior mediastinal
N2
extrathoracic
N3
