Description

Hylander and Rosenqvist identified factors associated with increased mortality in patients with myxedema coma. The mortality rate of myxedema coma is high (estimated to be from 30-60%).

Factors associated with a poor prognosis:

(1) advanced age (cutoff not given, will use >= 70 years in implementation)

(2) bradycardia

(3) persistent hypothermia (despite resuscitation attempts)

Other factors not listed by the authors that should impact prognosis:

(1) Signs of late disease (bradycardia, hypotension, hypoventilation, elevated creatinine) suggest organ failures, indicating that multi-organ failure should be a risk failure. In this context persistent hypothermia can be viewed as a metabolic failure.

(2) number of significant comorbid conditions
