Description

Huang et al reported prognostic factors for a patient with cardiogenic shock who receives extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy. The authors are from the National Heart Centre Singapore.

Patient selection: veno-arterial ECMO for cardiogenic shock

Exclusion: support for cardiac arrest

Complications included:

(1) hemorrhage (any bleeding requiring medical therapy or blood transfusion)

(2) stroke

(3) renal failure with need for hemodialysis

(4) limb ischemia

Predictors for mortality:

(1) preimplantation hypoalbuminemia (cutoff undefined)

(2) preimplantation serum creatinine > 100 µmol/L

(3) stroke

(4) limb ischemia

(5) elevated BMI

(6) shorter duration of ECMO (less than 7 days)
