Description

Hua et al identified factors associated with increased mortality for patients with a necrotizing soft tissue infeciton (NSTI). These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from multiple institutions in France.

Patient selection: necortizing soft tissue infection

Outcome: mortality

Paramters:

(1) age in years

(2) severe peripheral vascular disease

(3) NSTI acquired in the hospital

(4) number of foci of NSTI

(5) severe sepsis or septic shock on hospital admission

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 5

• The higher the score the greater the chances of death.

• A delay in diagnosis and/or surgical debridement may further increase the risk.
