Description

Gootee et al reported prognostic factors a patient with leiomyosarcoma. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Creighton University in Omaha.

Patient selection: leiomyosarcoma

Overall probability of 10-year survival: 45%

Factors associated with a worse prognosis:

(1) leiomyosarcoma of the female reproductive tract or abdomen

(2) treatment with surgery alone (without adjuvant radiation)

(3) positive surgical margin (macroscopic, microscopic) or indeterminate

(4) African American

(5) Stage III or IV

(6) high comorbidity (Charlson/Deyo>= 2)

(7) age > 40 years (worst if > 80 years)

Factors associated with a better prognosis:

(1) leiomyosarcoma of an extremity

(2) completely excised with all margins confirmed negative
