Description

Geer and Brennan identified prognostic factors in 799 patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma. The authors are from Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

Features of surgical resections:

(1) 18% of patients had curative resection

(2) 30 day operative mortality was 3.4%

(3) 5 year survival in patients who did not have resection was 0%

(4) 5 year survival in patients who had complete resection was 24%

Predictors of poor prognosis in univariate and multivariate analysis:

(1) metastasis to lymph nodes

(2) poor histologic tumor differentiation

(3) tumor size > 2.5 cm.
