Description

de Cos Escuin et al evaluated patients with Stage III non-small lung cancer who underwent chemoradiation. They identified a number of factors that were associated with a poor prognosis. The authors are from Hospital San Pedro de Alcantara, Clinica San Francisco, and Hospital Clinico Universitario Salamanca in Spain.

Patient selection: non-small cell lung cancer, Stage IIIA or Stage IIIB, ECOG 0 to 2, without major comorbidity

Factors associated with a poor prognosis in these patients:

(1) ECOG score 2

(2) weight loss

(3) elevated serum CEA concentration (>= 5 ng/mL)

(4) hemoglobin concentration < 12 g/dL

Chemoradiaton was considered contraindicated in a patient with an ECOG of 2 because of the poor survival shown by these patients.
