Description

Cushing et al identified prognostic factors for patients with a well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma. These factors can help identify patients who may benefit from closer monitoring and more aggressive management. The authors are from Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Well-differentiated thyroid carcinomas represent about 90% of thyroid malignancies and include follicular, papillary and Hurthle cell histologic types.

Parameters associated with increased risk of disease recurrence:

(1) family history of thyroid cancer (including MEN)

(2) Stage III or Stage IV at presentation

(3) total thyroidectomy

Parameters associated with decreased disease-specific survival (DSS):

(1) Stage III or Stage IV at presentation (worse with Stage IV)

(2) age >= 60 years of age
