Description

Cheng et al reported a number of factors associated with a poor prognosis for a patient with renal medullary carcinoma. A patient with one or more risk factors may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the University of Chicago.

Factors associated with aggressive behavior:

(1) absence of INI1 expression (hSNF5/SMARCB1/BAF47)

(2) rhabdoid histologic features (associated with eccentric nuclear displacement

where:

• INI1 is a highly conserved factor in the ATP-dependent chromatin-modifying complex. It is seen in a variety of tumors which share an aggressive clinical course.

Gross features associated with poor prognosis:

(1) metastatic disease (to lymph nodes, liver, lung, other)
