Description

Chen et al identified risk factors for mortality in a critically-ill patient with a Vibrio vulnifus infection in the intensive care unit (ICU). The authors are from Chung Shan Medical University, Chi Mei Medical Center, and Yan-Lin Kuo Hospital in Taiwan.

Risk factors associated with increased mortality:

(1) presence of hemorrhagic bullous skin lesions and/or necrotizing fasciitis

(2) 2 or more limbs show skin and/or soft tissue infection

(3) ICU admission APACHE II score >= 20

(4) failure to receive prompt surgical debridement (within 24 hours of ICU admission)

where:
