Canafoglia et al identified factors associated with a worse prognosis for a patient with Unverricht-Lundborg Disease. Some patients have a relatively mild course while others can be severely affected. The authors are from multiple institutions in Italy.
Patient selection: Unverricht-Lundborg disease
Predictors of a worse outcome:
(1) age at onset < 12 years
(2) early myoclonus (rated as mild or worse at 5 years after onset; most patients had none or minimal)
(3) seizures persisting >= 10 years after disease onset
(4) delay in starting valproate therapy > 1 year after disease onset
