Description

Bottomley et al identified prognostic factors for patients with malignant mesothelioma. These can help to identify patients who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from multiple institutions in Europe, Egypt and Canada participating in the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC).

Parameters:

(1) EORTC prognostic index (PI), as modified by Legrand et al

(2) patient-reported pain from the EORTC QLQ-C30

(3) loss of appetite

where:

• A 10 cm (100 mm) VAS scale will be used to measure pain in the implementation.

number of poor prognostic factors =

= SUM(points for all 3 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum number of poor prognostic factors: 0

• maximum number of poor prognostic factors: 3

• The greater the number of poor prognostic factors the worse the prognosis.

• In Figure 2 (page 5773) the 2 year survival for no pain and good PI was 30% vs for pain and bad PI at 5%.
