Description

Behranwala et al identified prognostic factors associated with a soft tissue sarcoma involving the buttock. This can help identify a patient who may require more aggressive therapy or who may be a candidate for a novel therapy. The authors are from Royal Marsden Hospital in London.

Histologic types include:

(1) liposarcoma

(2) leiomyosarcoma

(3) synovial sarcoma

(4) malignant fibrous histiocytoma

Features making surgical resection difficult:

(1) proximity to the sciatic nerve

(2) direct extension into the pelvis

(3) adherence to or invasion of the sacrum or pelvic bones

(4) direct extension to the perineum

Parameters affecting prognosis:

(1) diameter of the tumor in cm

(2) differentiation of the tumor

(3) operative margin

(4) presence of distant metastases

(5) location (superficial vs deep)
