Description

Bahloul et al identified prognostic factors for pediatric patients with scorpion envenomation. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Centre Hospitalo-Universitaire Habib Bourguiba and Centre Hospitalo-Universitaire Hedi Chaker in Tunisia.

Patient selection: pediatric patients < 16 years of age with scorpion envenomation

Scorpions species involved: Androctonus australus, Butus occitanus, Scorpio maurus

Risk factors for poor outcome:

(1) Glasgow coma score < 8

(2) pulmonary edema

(3) cardiogenic shock

Risk factors for heart failure:

(1) systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS)

(2) temperature > 39°C

(3) blood glucose > 15 mmol/L (> 270 mg/dL)
