Description

Assayag et al identified factors associated with mortality for patients with rheumatoid arthritis-associated interstitial lung disease (ILD). This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the University of California San Francisco and the University of British Columbia.

Patient selection: rheumatoid arthritis-associated interstitial lung disease

Outcome: mortality

Risk factors associated with increased mortality:

(1) older age (will use >=65 years in the implementation)

(2) male gender

(3) lower diffusion capacity for carbon monoxide as percent of predicted

(4) more extensive fibrosis

(5) usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) pattern

(6) greater RA disease activity score

The mortality tends to increase as the number of risk factors increase.
