Description

Lewis et al studied prognostic factors for synovial sarcomas localized to the extremity. The authors are from the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

Criteria for localized primary tumor:

(1) previously untreated or the biopsy was done at the time of presentation

(2) no evidence of metastasis

Parameters found by multivariate analysis to be independent adverse predictors:

(1) tumor size

(2) tumor invasion

Criteria for tumor invasion:

(1) bone invasion: invasion of tumor through the periosteum and breaching the cortex

(2) neurovascular invasion: invasion into the perineurium of a nerve or through the intima of a large vein or artery
