Anorectal malignant melanoma tends to have a poor prognosis, which is affected by a number of factors.
Poor prognostic factors:
(1) misdiagnosis as hemorrhoids
(2) amelanotic melanoma (which may comprise a third of tumors)
(3) failure to observe or detect
(4) distant metastases
(5) delay by the patient to seek care
(6) inadequate initial management
The presence of one or more of these findings may be associated with a worse prognosis.
