Description

Gangrenous cholecystitis can be a serious condition that needs to be treated aggressively.


Prognostic factors in a patient with gangrenous cholecystitis:

(1) delay in surgery (based on time between onset of symptoms and time of surgery)

(2) sepsis

(3) low white blood cell count (< 4,000 per µL)

(4) elevated serum liver function tests (AST, ALT, total bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase)

(5) advanced age

(6) pericholecystic fluid collection on ultrasonography
