Description

Synovial sarcoma (SS) is an uncommon soft tissue sarcoma that often affects young adults. A number of features may affect overall survival.

Synovial sarcoma is associated with the t(X;18)(p11.2;q11.2) translocation, which results in a SS18-SSX fusion gene.

Variant fusion genes: SS18-SSX1, SS18-SSX2 and SS18-SSX4

Factors associated with better overall survival:

(1) younger age (age < 33 years in Ren et al; <35 years in Charbonneau et al)

(2) tumor size < 5 cm

(3) UICC stage 1 or 2

(4) FNCLCC Grade 2

(5) biphasic histology

(6) SS18-SSX2 fusion gene by PCR (versus SS18-SSX1)

(7) higher expression of FGFR3 (fibroblast growth factor receptor)
