Carson et al developed the Prognosis for Prolonged Ventilation (ProVent) score to predict prognosis for patients requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation. This can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University and East Carolina School of Medicine.
Data of evaluation: day 21 of mechanical ventilation
Parameter:
(1) age of the patient in years
(2) need for vasopressor agents
(3) need for hemodialysis
(4) platelet count

Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 4
• The prognosis becomes worse as the number of risk factors increase.
