Description

Malathion is an organophosphate insecticide that can be used to treat lice. It is an effective agent that is ovicidal. However, its use is associated with a number problems.


 

Mechanism of action: irreversible cholinesterase inhibition

 

Problems in using malathion:

(1) objectionable odor, which can result in decreased compliance

(2) prolonged application period (up to 12 hours)

(3) flammability

(4) acute toxicity if ingested

(5) possible carcinogenicity with chronic exposure
