Fear of flying is fairly common. It can have a number of impacts on the affected person and others.
Problems caused by flying phobia:
(1) inability to fly by air, resulting in a need to find an alternative travel method and/or interfering with work or life demands
(2) self-medication with alcohol
(3) medication with a sedative
(4) demand to get off of a plane prior to take off
(5) panic attack during the flight (see below)
(6) work impairment for a member of a flight crew
(7) shame and loss of self-esteem
Triggers for a panic attack during a flight:
(1) waking up suddenly
(2) traveling alone
(3) turbulence
(4) small airplane
(5) personal stress
