Mitri et al evaluated children with a paranpneumonic effusion. Chemical analysis of the pleural fluid can identify a child who is more likely to require redrainage of the effusion. The authors are from Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boiston.

Paient selection: pediatric patient with parapneumonic effusion

Parameters:

(1) pH of the pleural fluid

(2) glucose concentration of the fluid in mg/dL
