Description

Zika virus can have nosocomial spread if precautions are not taken.


The core for prevention of nosocomial Zika virus spread is contact precautions:

(1) Avoid contact with blood and other body fluids.

(2) Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to reduce exposure.

(3) Use of eye protection and facial barriers if splashes likely.

(4) Immediately clean up spills of blood and body fluid with appropriate materials and disinfectants.

(5) Medical equipment for reuse should be cleaned and sterilized appropriately.

(6) Standard cleaning of rooms, surfaces and linens.

 

A person with exposure to blood or body fluids:

(1) The person should wash the exposed area immediately with soap and water.

(2) Any contaminated clothing should be removed and cleaned appropriately.

(3) The exposed person should have an occupational health assessment to determine the severity of the exposure.

(4) A person having a significant exposure and the source patient may have serologic or molecular testing to aid in the investigation.

 

Significant exposures include:

(1) contact of blood or body fluid on nonintact skin

(2) percutaneous or puncture injury

(3) splash onto mucous membrane including eyes
