Bradley et al made recommendations for the prevention of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in pediatric patients. The authors are from the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society and the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
Recommended vaccinations as suitable for age:
(1) Streptococcus pneumoniae
(2) Hemophilus influenza type b
(3) Bordetella persussis
(4) influenza virus
Parents, family members and caregivers should be immunized against influenza virus and pertussis. Older adults may benefit from immunization against Streptococcus pneumonia.
High-risk infants may benefit from prophylaxis against RSV with palivizumab (Synagis).
Infant defenses may also be assisted by:
(1) breastfeeding
(2) maternal IgG antibodies that crossed the placenta
