Description

Oven doors can cause significant thermal injury, especially in children. Certain steps can help reduce the risk of these burns.

General steps:

(1) Turn off the oven immediately after use.

(2) Do not use the oven as a room-heating source.

(3) Replace a defective or unsafe oven, either by notifying the landlord (if in an apartment) or by purchasing a new appliance.

(4) Close the oven door as soon as food has been transferred in or out.

(5) Keep the oven clean and in good working order.

(6) Be careful if the oven door closes too easily when open.

Steps with children present:

(1) A child not under direct supervision should be placed in a crib or playpen when the oven is on.

(2) Access to the cooking area should be restricted by placing a kitchen gate.

(3) Access near the oven should not be allowed until after the oven door's outer temperature is cool to the touch.

(4) If possible place the oven out of a child's reach.
