Description

A solution may be specified with the solute in parts per million (ppm). This can be estimated from the molar ratios of solute and solvent.


 

Assumption: The solute is nondissociated.

 

moles of solute =

= (weight in grams) / (molecular weight of solute)

 

moles of solvent =

= (weight in grams) / (molecular weight of solvent)

 

weight in grams of solvent =

= (density in grams per mL) * (volume in mL)

 

(moles of solute) / ((moles of solute) + (moles of solvent)) =

= (parts per million of solute) / 1,000,000)

 

If weight of solute is known:

 

parts per million of solute =

= ((moles of solute) / ((moles of solute) + (moles of solvent))) * 1,000,000

 

If parts per million is known:

 

moles of solute =

= ((parts per million) * (moles of solvent)) / (1000000 - (parts per million))
