Description

Friedman et al developed a simple preoperative score which can help to identify a patient at risk for a sternal surgical site infection (SSI) following coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. A patient at risk may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Victorian Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.

risk score =

= SUM(points for both risk factors)

Interpretation:

• minimum risk score: 0

• maximum risk score: 3

• The higher the score the greater the risk of a postoperative sternal surgical site infection. The risk increases about 2-fold for each point (so a person with a score of 3 has an 8-fold increase in risk).

The receipt of a blood transfusion was an additional risk factor for a surgical site infection.
