Tympanosclerosis is a complication of recurrent middle ear infections. Surgery for recurrent middle ear infects may be complicated by the onset or worsening of tympanosclerosis. Dong et al reported a score to identify a patient at increased risk prior to surgery. The authors are from Zhejian University.
Parameters:
(1) sex
(2) air bone gap in dB hearing loss at 250 Hz
(3) aditus ad antrum blockage (aditus ad mastoid antrum: a large irregular aperture which leads back from the epitympanic recess into an airspace
(4) eardrum calcification type
(5) number of years with otitis media

Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 7
• The higher the score the greater the risk of tympahnosclerosis.
