Description

Hastrup et al reported the Prehospital Acute Stroke Severity (PASS) scale for the prehospital evaluation of an acute stroke patient. This can help to identify a patient who has a large artery occlusion. The authors are from Aarhus University in Denmark.

Patient selection: acute stroke

Parameters (taken from the NIHSS):

(1) responses to the level of consciousness (LOC) questions (month, age)

(2) gaze palsy and/or deviation

(3) arm weakness

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 3

• A score >=2 is associated with a large artery occlusion.

Performance:

• The area under the ROC was 0.74.
