Description

Zisook et al reported factors predictive of remission from an episode of major depression.  The authors are from multiple institutions in the United States participating in the Veterans Administration VAST-D Study.

Patient selection: veteran with major depression

Predictors of remission:

(1) employment

(2) not severe depression

(3) not chronically depressed

(4) less anxiety

(5) absence of complicated grief symptoms

(6) absence of childhood adversity

(7) better quality of life

(8) positive mental health

These factors can help to identify a patient who may or may not have a better prognosis.
