Xhaard et al identified factors predictive of transplant-related mortality after all-hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT). The authors are from Hopital Saint-Louis (Paris), University of Sao Paulo and INSERM UMR1160 (Paris).
Patient selection: allo-hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT)
Outcome: transplant-related mortality
Predictors from multivariate analysis:
(1) mismatched, unrelated donors (OR 2.8)
(2) shorter (lowest quartile) pretransplant age-adjusted telomere length in the recipient, determined in peripheral blood leukocytes (OR 2.2)
where:
• The age-adjusted telomere length is the observed length minus the linear predicted length for age.
Interpretation:
• minimum number of predictors: 0
• maximum number of predictors: 2
• The risk of transplant-related mortality increases with the number of predictors present.
