Description

Wei et al identified a number of factors which may predict the onset of prefrailty in an older adult. The authors are from Fudan University in Shanghai.

Prefrailty can be determined with the FRAIL questionnaire of Moreley et al with a score 1 or 2 out of 5 (with nonfrail 0 and frail >= 3).

Prefrailty tends to occur between 65 and 70 years of age.

Predictors:

(1) low prealbumin in g/L

(2) low grip strength in kilograms

(3) urinary retention

(4) constipation

(5) illiterate

where:

• Prealbumin concentrations and low grip strength show overlap with nonfrailty and frailty.
