Wang et al reviewed outcomes for patients who had fallen from a significant height. They identified a number of factors associated with outcomes. The authors are from National Taiwan University.
Patient selection: fall from a height more than 1 story (> 3.6 meters)
Parameters:
(1) out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA)
(2) height fallen in meters
(3) trauma injury severity score (TRISS)
(4) head/neck injury by AIS
Predictors of poor outcome:
(1) OHCA (98% mortality if present)
(2) greater height, especially when > 6 meters, with risk increasing with further height
(3) TRISS score < 0.90
(4) head/neck AIS >= 3
Best survival - all of the following:
(1) no history of OHCA
(2) fall <= 4 meters
(3) TRISS >= 0.945
(4) head/neck AIS < 3
