Description

Wagner et al reported risk factors for postoperative venous thromboembolism in a woman with endometrial cancer. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the Ohio State University.

Patient selection: uterine carcinoma (adenocarcinoma, sarcoma, mixed)

Rate of venous thromboembolism: 1.7%

Predictors of venous thromboembolism risk from multivariate analysis:

(1) advanced tumor stage (FIGO Stage III or IV)

(2) preoperative leukocytosis (> 11 * 10^9/L)

A modified Caprini score was significant for thromboembolism if the score is >= 8.

Additional predictors from univariate analysis:

(1) preoperative hemoglobin < 10 g/dL

(2) adjuvant chemotherapy

(3) high grade histology

(4) open surgery
