Description

Some college athletes who have had a concussion may develop depression. An athlete at risk may benefit from counseling and interventions to improve mood. The authors are from Dupont Hospital for Children, University of Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania State University.


Patient selection: collegiate athlete following a concussion

 

Risk factors for depression:

(1) baseline depression prior to the concussion

(2) postconcussion symptoms

(3) lower IQ

(4) older age at first participation of organized sport

(5) fewer games missed due to concussion

(6) nonwhite ethnicity

 

The risk of depression may increase with the number of risk factors present.
