Description

Thompson et al review risk factors for prostate cancer. The authors are from the University of Texas San Antonio, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, University of Colorado and National Cancer Institute.


Predictors of prostate cancer:

(1) higher serum PSA concentration

(2) positive family history of prostate cancer

(3) abnormal digital rectal exam (DRE)

 

Prostate cancer can be found at all concentrations of serum PSA.

 

Factors associated with reduced risk:

(1) history of a negative prostate biopsy

 

Predictors for high-grade prostate cancer (Gleason score >= 7):

(1) higher serum PSA concentration

(2) abnormal digital rectal exam (DRE)

(3) older age at biopsy

(4) African American race
