Description

The Stroke Prevention in Atrial Fibrillation investigators identified factors predictive of thromboembolism in atrial fibrillation.

Patient selection: atrial fibrillation

Clinical predictors:

(1) recent congestive heart failure

(2) history of hypertension

(3) history of previous thromboembolism

Number of Clinical Predictors

Risk of Arterial Thromboembolism

17.6%

Echocardiographic predictors:

(1) left ventricular dysfunction

(2) enlargement of the left atrium

The echocardiographic predictors are useful in patients with none of the clinical predictors.
